We all aspire to reach the top. Everyone has a talent they want to share with the world---the need for recognition is a constant theme, but when it comes to writers, this need can greatly interfere with creativity and productivity. Sometimes, the best way to combat a crippling mindset is to put your big girl (or boy) pants on, and just get it done! With that being said, here are a few tried and true tips to increase your output and inspire you to just get writing!

Perfection is Overrated- Why Chase it?

Seeking perfection will get you nowhere. No. I take that back. It will reward you with a headache, an unhealthy outlook on life, and zero sense of accomplishment. Instead, opt for healthier alternatives that will more often than not, fuel you with the inspiration you need to keep doing what you love. Writing was intended to be a creative means of expression and viable route of communication; its not your enemy, so why be so hard on yourself? Approach it with enthusiasm, and soon the creative floodgates will open again.

Make your Workspace Work for You

Picture this scenario: There's a pile of papers on top of your desk that's been sitting there for two weeks now. You push it over to reveal your keyboard underneath, but you can't remember where you placed your notes, so there's no way to continue the work without possibly overlooking a few key details. What's wrong with this picture? Well, I’m glad you asked. This workspace is not conducive to a healthy work-life balance. According to the United States Department of Labor, operating in a clean work environment promotes productivity and reduces unwanted hazards to personal safety. So, it is proven that keeping your workstation clean will not only improve your speed, but also maintain a safe and healthy environment as well.

Evaluate your habits

Look at your daily schedule to see if there are any extra activities that you can cut out of your routine to make time for the most important thing: your writing. Often times, we complain about not having enough time in our day to take care of all of our responsibilities, but most people will notice (after careful evaluation) that there are certain aspects of their life that are mis prioritized. Ask yourself these questions: Do I have to watch that television show the day it airs? Must I take every call that I receive? How much time do I actually dedicate to my writing? Weighing out your priorities will help you become a better decision-maker, and may I add-- get things done!

Renew your mind

Renewing your mind has to be one of the most key ingredients to making the ultimate productivity pie. How can you do any of the steps above if you haven’t renewed your mind? I get it—being positive can be hard. Sometimes, it just isn’t easy to get out of the bed and draft that long essay or novel, but deadlines don’t wait on anyone. Whether you have an active end date for your project or you’re taking on a new and exciting sideline task, it is important to approach the venture with completion in mind. Surround yourself with positive affirmations, inspirational quotes, or implement a reward system when you complete a goal; this will help in creating a fresh sense of mental clarity and focus.
